Moral Fibre's Savoury Crunches and the Joy of Summer
This month the focus is on different types of moral fibre starting with the benefits of beetroot, just in time for the launch of our new Beetroot Crunch in August. Beetroot has a distinctive sweet taste and is a great source of carbohydrate and fibre. It is a savoury delight when mixed with walnuts, rosemary and a touch of salt.
Nutritionist, Abbey Dunham, tells us there is some evidence that eating beetroot can lower your blood pressure. The key to this effect is the nitrates (also found in green leafy vegetables) which widen blood vessels. Thanks to these nitrates, beetroot may also be useful if you are looking for an extra boost in the gym; studies looking at exercise performance found it was slightly improved, both generally and at high altitude. There is even some evidence to suggest that your pre-workout beetroot fix will help reduce muscle fatigue the next day.*
So what does this mean? Well, the best way to keep your body healthy is to eat a balanced and varied diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables, get plenty of exercise and watch your salt, fat, sugar and alcohol intake. However, if you want to try and lower your blood pressure or beat your personal best, adding some beetroot to your diet might just be an added bonus!
Although our snacks are entirely plant based snacks and therefore vegan, our three savoury options, Chilli Crunch, Courgette Crunch and our new Beetroot Crunch go beautifully with cheese and dips, perfect for that summer picnic or with pre-dinner drinks at the end of a long day. With up to 8g of fibre and 25g of protein per 100g, they are perfect for topping up the energy levels.

While the UK is in political and emotional turmoil following the decision to leave the EU, there is one young man who has his very own brand of moral fibre.
Henry Fraser dived into the sea on the first day of his beach holiday with friends in Portugal 7 years ago. This innocent action changed his life forever when he hit a hidden sandbank head first and dislocated the fourth vertebrae in his neck. He was paralysed from the shoulders down. At the time, Henry was at school on a rugby scholarship, destined to become a professional rugby player with Saracens like his elder brother Will. Since then he has gone through intensive rehab, finished his A levels, started writing sports articles, became actively involved in social media and now goes on circuit giving inspirational talks. Just eighteen months ago when in bed with a prolonged illness he taught himself to draw and paint with his mouth and this weekend hosted his first public art exhibition at The Grove in Watford. Henry’s quiet resilience, positive outlook and sheer bloody-minded determination has taken him to places and famous people he would never have dreamed of before the accident. Henry is no quitter.
